The first Petroleum Congress of Turkey was organized in 1970. In the past 39 years, this congress has developed and been organized jointly by the Chamber of Petroleum Engineers, The Turkish Petroleum Geologists Association and the Chamber of Geophysical Engineers, Thus, it has become globally known with the multinational identities of its delegates and become an excellent platform to discuss not only the technical and scientific issues but also the economical and political dimensions of petroleum industry.

The first two congress realized in 1970 and 1974 were organized by the Turkısh Petroleum Geologists Association. In these two congress mainly issues related to the application of geology to petroleum exploration were discussed.

Later in the years of 1976,1978,1980 and 1982, the congress organized jointly by Turkish Petroleum Geologists Association, the Chamber of Chemical Engineers and All Economists Association has reached a multidimensional status where influential disciplines were represented and problems were discussed.

The 7th Turkish Petroleum Congress which could not be organized for a period of time due to various reasons, was organized in 1987 jointly by Turkish Petroleum Geologists Association and UCTEA Chamber of Petroleum Engineers and has gained an international identity with the vast participation of foreign specialists. This was followed by the 8th Turkish Petroleum Congress realized by the same two organizations.

The Congress has been jointly organized every two years by Turkısh Petroleum Geologists Association, UCTEA Chamber of Petroleum Engineers and UCTEA Chamber of Geophysics Engineers. The congresses realized successfully in the years 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2007 have illustrated the best examples of cooperative work and solidarity between complimenting disciplines of diverse fields of petroleum industry.

The main aims of the congress are; intensifying search efforts and gathering of related sources, countenance of scientific activities, and especially attracting foreign capital to our country which constitutes an important position in the world geology in terms of richness of hydrocarbon sources.
